Everyone’s path looks different; it’s incredible that we would even think for one moment that our lives were meant to look like someone else’s, or that we need to be at the same pace as another. Pace by definition means a step. There is no way when we look at our lives and how many steps we take and paths we embark upon that we can be too far ahead of someone or too far behind; when following God, you are right where you are supposed to be; in step with His will.
Recently my heart wanted to stop having dreams and goals; I had thoughts like, “if I am only going to perform a few more years, why train and waste time? Training is for those with a long career stretch.” But, it occurred to me that even those that would train for a marathon, might only complete one marathon in their lifetime. The reward is not merely the end, but the means to the end; it’s the journey. Life is a journey. I was reminded by my sweet husband that hard work is rewarding. The idea of setting a goal and accomplishing that venture can be quite a feat sometimes, but the road to the goal can be such growth for us. For me, I had to stop comparing so that I could stop walking in defeat.
Thus, I stopped comparing myself to other artists who may have already retired or have continued their career past 50. I have begun to see the beauty in my own story; one of “setbacks”, trials, delays, joys, adventure, and freedom. I have found joy in the process.
